How To Sell On eBay :: Do It Yourself Websites Do It Yourself Websites: Why To Build Your Website YourselfA "do it yourself website" is the best tactic if you really, really want to be an Internet marketer. Newbies often debate the best way to build their websites, but after years on the Net, I believe you need to do it yourself, and here's why ... The Internet is made up of two elements: 1. Text That's all. Period. End of story, because all the refinements of today, like Flash or live audio, are simply refinements on these two basics. So what are your choices if you want to build a website? 1. Buy a template: This can work sometimes. I've bought them myself and they do look great. But there are some real problems with this: * It can be expensive - especially if you want multiple websites. Good templates aren't cheap. * If you don't know what you're doing, you can waste your money on templates that won't work for you. For instance, you will often see templates with icons, pictures, company logos, "Buy Now" buttons, etc., that look great. But when you download the images they are NOT editable! If they are in jpg or gif format, you can't make changes. The most common 'editable' images are in psd format. That's great for me because I own Photoshop, but do you have this software (currently selling for $599)? If you don't - forget it. Those images can NOT be changed. * It can be a giant PAIN to edit templates! What if you get a template that allows 8' of space - and your copy needs 10" of space. What do you do? Do you know that you have to do something called 'slicing' to enlarge that space? It's tedious and time consuming and requires more learning. The better templates take care of this for you, but again, they're the most expensive. The cheaper ones require slicing - or cutting out/changing your copy. Do you really think you should change your sales copy to suit a template designer? * Design does not equal sales. Just because something looks good doesn't mean it's a good sales site. 2. Pay someone to do it for you. * This can be expensive. I currently have a goal of building two websites each week for a year. Let's assume I pay someone $500 to build a website (which is quite a reasonable amount for a well done site - it often costs much more.) That means I will be paying $1,000/week, every week, for a year. Whew. Think of the marketing I could buy for that same amount of money. * Every time you want to make a change you must hire someone to do it for you and wait until they get around to doing it. * Once again, just because a site looks good doesn't mean it is a sales site. All the best marketers will tell you that plainer sites do better because the focus is on the copy, the words, rather than fancy graphics, etc. Take a look at the top sites on the net. They rarely are flashy and dramatically impressive. These people know better. What if you only want one website so cost doesn't matter? My question to you is: are you absolutely certain, positive beyond a doubt, that you will never want more sites? If you are, then use a template or hire someone. But if you are wrong, when you want site #2, site #3, etc. you are going to be just as dependent as you are now. 3. Buy some site making software. Every program I have seen involves a learning curve. One popular site builder, for example, has a 500 page manual, is expensive and a lot of the learning doesn't transfer to other site systems. I looked at another one recently with a 300 page manual. The time that you spend learning these methodologies could be spent learning an HTML editor that will make you fully capable of building your own sites, whenever you choose, for almost zero cost. Recently, we have heard some rave reviews for this no-cost site building software: http://nvu.com Go there, get it and try it out. My honest opinion: spend the time and learn do it yourself websites. Saying "I want to be an Internet marketer" and not learning how to build websites for yourself is like wanting to be a dentist - and refusing to learn about teeth; like being a star athlete - and refusing to practice a sport. So what if your first sites won't win a design award? You'll get better. And you will be independent! Isn't that what all of this is about?
