Yard Sale Pricing & Garage Sale Pricing For eBay SellersYard sale pricing and garage sale pricing are clearly of major concern to anyone interested in buying goodies for resale on eBay. So many so-called 'experts' on eBay advise newbie seller to go to yard sales and garage sales. Obviously, if we do that, we must have 'good' pricing or we won't be able to resell at a profit. First, though, we need to wonder if this is good advice at all for selling on eBay? The answer is a definite, loud and clear ... yes and no! Yes, it's a good idea for newbies because they can find goodies to sell with little risk. The usual way that sellers begin on eBay is by selling items from their home (who needs that chartreuse goat umbrella stand from Aunt Minerva anyway?) Eventually, though, people do run out of things to sell. And that's where the yard and garage sales come in. If the price is right, these events can be great ways to find bargains to sell on eBay. Probably their best use is for practice. After all, if you paid $2 for an item, and it isn't successful on eBay, the loss isn't too great. And yard and garage sales are big business these days. Even The Terminator governor, Arnold Schwarzennegar, use them to raise revenue for California:
On the other hand, yard sales and garage sales are only a short term answer for eBay sellers. They're great as an apprenticeship, but not so wonderful as a business model. The reason is that a seller can spend all weekend visiting numerous garage sales - and not have much of anything to show for it. The supply, in other words, is just too uncertain. For a steady business, you need a supplier that you count on to keep your sale items coming, just as we teach in our Auction Genius Course. But, assuming you are a such a sale, how do you determine proper pricing when lusting over a silver tea set or a lifelong collection of fishing flies? Two rules of thumb might keep you out of trouble (trouble = paying more for something than it's worth on eBay): 1. Stick to categories you know, especially at first. No one knows everything, and while I might be able to figure what I can afford to pay for a doll, comic books or old books, I don't have a clue about old typewriters or CB radio parts. 2. The really safe way is to use today's technology. Have your cell phone with you to be in contact with someone at home on a computer (or a Starbuck's with cappuccino and a laptop). They can research as you are looking. 3. If it seems like an especially dedirable sale - for example, a large number of families combined - be certain to get there early, early, early. Fanatical and/or professional types always are the first ones there and they scoop up the bargains before others have breakfast, an extra cup of coffee and then mosey on over. Yard sale pricing and garage sale pricing homework must be done carefully if you wish to succeed on eBay. No point in doing it, if we're not making money!
