Shipping Containers: Proper Shipping Containers For Your Cargo Protects Your Item

Transporting goods from one place to another requires for it to be temporarily stored in shipping containers. Shipping containers are rectangular box with standard size used as storage when transporting goods

Shipping containers can be made of different materials such as wood, plastic, or aluminum, and are designed differently so as to fit for different use and purposes. These containers also come in different sizes and dimensions, length are usually 10 ft, 20 ft, 30 ft, and 40 ft.  The width is usually 8 ft.  Height could either be 8.5 ft or 9.5 ft.

When talking about shipping containers it is important to know what shipping container’s rating, tare mass or tare weight and payload is. Shipping container’s rating is the maximum weight allowed for a shipping container with its contents included. The weight of the empty container under normal operating conditions is referred as tare mass or tare weight. Payload is the total weight that a shipping container can carry, although in the actual scenario a payload is lesser depending on the law governing the maximum load a vehicle can carry on a certain area.

Each shipping container will have stickers that show its shipping container’s rating, tare mass or tare weight and payload. Identification codes are also placed outside and inside the container walls. The identification codes has the name of the owner of the containers and the container number in it, these data are also used in the bill of lading for better monitoring, control and tracing of the container and its cargo.

There are two general classifications of shipping containers, the general purpose or dry cargo container and the special cargo container. The general purpose container is the most common container used in the industry which is built strong and weatherproof with one of its sidewalls, usually the end wall, used as door. The special cargo containers on the other hand are mostly used for transporting chemicals and food – usually those that are perishable.

Depending on what is to be transported, a shipping container that is fit for the product is necessary for the proper transport and handling during shipment. Various shipping containers are available that can cater to the different needs of a particular product to ensure safety. Though the shipping companies usually handles this it is still advisable to ask what shipping container is to be used for your shipment to be better ensured of getting the right shipping service and shipping containers for your goods.
