DIRECTV, HDTV, DVR – what do these contractions mean? (for eBay sellers)

The high definition market is full of potentially unclear terms. The three most important and popular are: DIRECTV, HDTV, DVR. Most of us have heard them at least once, but do we really know what they mean? What is DIRECTV anyway and how is it different from other satellite TVs? What are HDTV standards? How is DVR different from a good old video recorder?

DIRECTV:

DIRECTV is a satellite TV company specializing in delivering HDTV channels to all its subscribers. All you need is having a DIRECTV receiver and a HDTV set (no DVR is necessary though it can be used to store programs). The offer, unfortunately, is still somewhat limited and covers mostly sport channels. The good thing is that it grows almost every month. The bad – that with the growth of HD cable networks DIRECTV may rapidly lose its market position and become a niche HDTV company instead of a major player.

HDTV:

HDTV stands for high definition television. It is a new, digital TV standard that will probably someday replace old-fashioned analog TV. It offers much higher resolution, better image quality and more appealing screen proportions (16:9 instead of old 4:3). The programs are now broadcast mostly via DIRECTV satellites and a few HDTV-friendly cable networks. As HDTV lets make full use of digital gadgets, in addition to better image quality, its other improvements include allowing you record TV programs on a DVR while watching a different channel or automatically scheduling the recording.

DVR:

DVR stands for digital video recorder. Now most of DVR units are hard disk-based. They are often sold as a part of HDTV sets. In addition to all advantages of a video recorder, most DRV units can easily transfer all stored data to the PC as well as record the images that do not appear on the screen – such as another HDTV program broadcast whether transmitted by a cable network of DIRECTV. More and more often a DVR unit is installed directly into the HDTV set. As the result, a DVR quickly takes place of old video recorders.
