A cheap HDTV converter (or more precisely, HDTV-analog converter) is one of the gadgets that will probably change the face of the digital television industry, but no one has seriously started designing it.

Almost two years ago, The Association for Maximum Service Television Stations and National Association of Broadcasters announced that they intended to pursue development of such device, but so far there is no sign of any reasonably-priced HDTV converter on the market.

It is unclear why there aren't any HDTV converters on the market now. While it might bring a short-term drop in sales of HDTV sets, the positive long-term effects would be only positive from the industry's point of view.

There are millions of people who do not seriously consider buying an HDTV set because they do not see any reason for that. In the effect, the range and number of HDTV channels is still all-time low, postponing the ending of analog broadcasting. Converters could speed this process up, making more people own HDTV-ready TVs.

This, in turn would make more and more cable networks add HDTV channels to their offer, making it possible to close analog broadcasting.

Initially of course, many people would buy an HDTV converter instead of full HDTV set, so the sales rates would probably go down a little. After a few years, however, the industry would boom as there would be no analog TV models at all.

HDTV converters would be also great news for most tradespersons, especially HDTV online stores or eBay stores specializing in high definition TV equipment. The sales rate of converters would increase the market's value four- or even fivefold.
