Diet articles are everywhere these days, in magazines and periodicals, and also on countless websites on the Internet. With the plethora of self-proclaimed diet gurus and fad diet programs all claiming to hold the secret to easy weight loss, it may be hard to pick which ones to believe. A bit of common sense, as well as a healthy dose of skepticism, should be applied when considering these diet programs (more of which seem to pop up every so often!).

Perhaps more reliable than these fad diets are the old standby dieting tips that doctors and nutritionists have long been giving to those who wish to lose weight. And the most important of these is simply that there is no quick and easy way to get long-term results. Sure, some of the fad diets may actually help you shed pounds quickly, but without lifestyle changes backing it up, you may find that you gain the pounds back just as quickly.

A healthy weight loss diet does not involve the extremes that some popular diet programs advocate. Some diets restrict carbohydrate intake severely, focusing on protein-rich foods such as meats and beans. These diets can often yield results, but the weight lost is usually just water weight, which can be gained back surprisingly quickly. Still others may advocate the addition of particular foods to your diet. However, realize that drastic changes to your diet can turn out to be unhealthy in the long term. Be sure to be aware of the consequences of these dietary changes, if you are determined to try some of these popular “miracle diets”.

The better diet to follow may not promise quick and easy results, but it is healthy and will result in slow but steady weight loss. Simply reduce the caloric content of your daily diet, by removing processed foods that are rich in empty carbohydrates, and by slightly reducing your customary serving size. More importantly, make sure that your diet is well balanced, meaning that you have food sources for the important nutrients, vitamins, and minerals.

Do not starve yourself! Even just a slight reduction in calorie intake can translate to a healthy weight loss of one or two pounds each week. This rate of weight loss allows the body to slowly become accustomed to its changing mass – sudden weight loss or gain is often not healthy, and puts undue stress on the body.

Diet articles and fad diet programs may seem attractive for the results that they claim to produce, but do not be fooled. Healthy weight loss can be had through a diet reduced in calories, but still balanced among the major food groups. Slowly and steadily, you will eventually achieve your ideal weight without resorting to any drastic measures.
