Q: A Quick Overview of Satellite Radio

A: In short, satellite radio means pay-radio, or as some people also calls it subscription radio. It is similar to a traditional radio, but it comes with more programs in it. Currently, the service is available in Africa, Asia and Europe due to services provided by WorldSpace and in North America provided by Sirius and XM Radio.

Q: What Advantages does this New Radio Offer?

A: You will get several programs that include: music channels (rock, modern rock, alternative, country, pop etc) weather, news, traffic, entertainment and sports AND no commercials! All music channels are commercial free.

The radio has a digital signal and is similar to the quality of a good CD. It has no interference or static. You can get a satellite radio for more than your car like: your house, an RV, a boat – so that you can enjoy the programming variety the radio has to offer whether you are at home relaxing on the sofa or on vacation or even traveling for business. The only thing that really needs to be done is properly installing the equipment you need.

Q: What are the Disadvantages of Satellite Radio?

A: At this time, unfortunately, Alaska, Hawaii and U.S. Territories can’t receive the satellite radio’s signals.
There aren’t any local stations, but you do have local traffic and weather channels provided by XM and Sirius.

Q: What is the difference between XM and Sirius Radio?

A: There are a few differences between them. For instance, XM provides over 150 channels and the other has 120 channels. XM has two NASCAR racing channels, Major League Baseball, PGA TOUR coverage, plus ACC, Big Ten, and Pac-10 football and basketball coverage and the Sirius offers Live NFL, NHL, and NBA play-by-play, plus English Premier League soccer and college sports game. But they both charge the same monthly fee of $12.95/Month.

Q: How do I install my New Satellite Radio?

A: There are a couple different things that are necessary to get started with your new satellite radio. First and foremost you will need a satellite radio antenna that picks up the signal from communicational satellites and then delivering it to your satellite radio receiver.

Next, you will need a satellite radio tuner to pass the signal from the radio antenna to the receiver. There are three basic types of radio tuners to choose from. The is the plug-and-play satellite tuner that can be used at home or in the car with a portable boom-box-radio wherever you have satellite signal and only one subscription is needed.

There are three basic types of satellite radio tuners for the car: universal tuners, satellite radio –ready in-dash receivers and in-dash receivers with a built-in satellite radio tuner. The last type is the home satellite radio tuner perfect for using them in-door. The third is a satellite radio receiver that helps to select chancels and categories to view different songs and/or artist information. Lastly is a subscription to XM or Sirius radio that is required to receive programming.

If you want the best quality sound in playing in your car, you have the below three options:

OPTION 1. In-dash receiver that includes a built-in satellite radio tuner
OPTION 2."Satellite radio-ready" receiver connects to an external satellite radio tuner
OPTION 3. A plug-and-play satellite radio tuner that connects to your car stereo auxiliary input.
