1957 Topps Baseball Cards: A Short History of Topps Baseball Cards

Because of some difficulties during the World War I and the time of Great Depression, owners of the company decided to focus on another product. They chose the chewing gum and changed the name of the company to Topps.

First baseball cards made by Topps ...

Since 1950 company decided to add some trading cards featuring Hopalong Cassidy to the packages to increase the chewing gum sales. Shortly after that they started adding baseball cards, which soon became their primary product.

In 1951 Topps produced their first baseball cards sets. Both sets contained 52 cards and just like the playing cards they were blank on one side. The backs of the cards were either red or blue.

Cards were rather small, with the size of 2 inches by 2-5/8 inches, so in 1952 cards were larger (2-5/8 inches by 3-5/8 inches).

In 1957 Topps decided to shrink the dimension of the baseball cards. From this time the standard is 2-1/2 inches by 3-1/2 inches.
