Wider ads seem to be more appealing to many visitors because they're easier to read. Someone is more likely to spend a little more time reading everything than just glancing at the first few words if something is easy to read. However, you also need to balance your ad format and the content of your pages. And if your notice your Adsense CTR dropping, try moving your ads. Sometimes return visitors are only interested on something new in your web page. They would only start clicking what they didn't see the last time they visited your page and that would again increase your Adsense CTR.
