"What sells on eBay" is probably the second most-asked question we receive from auction students (the first being, "How do I find something to sell?") Unfortunately - and fortunately - there is no easy answer to this important question. It's too bad because it does make it harder for sellers to get started. But, it's good because it means that every get-rich-quick artist on the net can't succeed and ruin the game... like with spam or FFA sites.

So, the answer to 'what sells on eBay' must begin with understanding supply and demand. What newbies often do is find a product they love, go into ecstasies over it, and decide that it will, of course, be a big hit on eBay. Then they invest more money that they should - and get stuck with a garage full of unwanted stuff, like this email from an ezine reader:

"I bought 100 DVDs at $10.99 and put five of them on ebay and none of them got any bids so then i saw some others selling my same tapes for $6.99 and $7.99. What should I do?"

Unfortunately, this seller should have considered all the issues before he jumped. So, what are the issues in deciding what sells on eBay?

1. Demand: without a strong demand, there is little or no chance of selling successfully on eBay, or anywhere else online. There are various places to get this information. Here are a few of the best:

* The Overture search tool (http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion)
* Yahoo stores
* eBay itself, naturally

2. Next, you need to check competition. The same resources above will help, as well as:

* Google search engine
* Yahoo search engine

3. What are the prices on eBay? If the reader above had done his research before investing in the DVDs, he could have discovered that others were undercutting him and would not have made such a disastrous mistake.

You can do all this research by hand, in a long and tedious manner, if you wish but the easy and efficient and most moneymaking way is by using tools that do all the tedious stuff for you. Here is an example of some quick research on a particular brand of watch:

So, what to sell on eBay isn't such a mysterious question, after all. It has been years since I have had an unsuccessful eBay auction. That's because I always, always, always do my homework before investing in any new products. Fail to check in advance - repent later.
