Baby Dolls: Cherished Dolls Modeled on Human Babies

Baby dolls have been favorite children's toys since humans have lived on this planet. Crude dolls, thousands of years old, have been discovered in ancient civilizations. Made of such materials as clay, straw and carved wood, they have obviously been beloved companions to many generations of youngsters. Their popularity as toys still remains, of course, but they have also become collectible items in their own right, as the auction prices below reveal.

Our most expensive items above, for example, are from the famous Nancy Ann Storybook Dolls. The creator of the Storybook dolls, Nancy Ann Abbott, was born in 1901 as Rowena Haskin. In 1935 San Francisco she opened a book lending shop.

There she met Les Rowland who would in 1945 become her business partner. At the book shop Ms. Abbott dressed dolls and sold them. The dolls sold well, and in 1936 the Nancy Ann Dressed Dolls Company was born. In 1937 Mr. Rowland became a partner in the Nancy Ann company. The name was not changed until 1945.

The first dolls created by the fledgling company were the "Hush a Bye Baby" dolls. The bisque bodies for the dolls were made in Japan. Soon after, a line of "Storybook" dolls including Cinderella, Little Bo Peep and others was started. This line sold first at the Emporium in San Francisco, plus later at Marshall Fields, Harrods of London and many other fine department stores.

The two wonderful baby dolls are 5 1/2 inches tall, they have original sticker labels on the front which read "Nancy Ann Dressed Dolls", original sailor type outfits have matching patterns & molded socks.

An important point: knowing your baby dolls will make your eBay listings much more valuable. The more information - and authenticity - you can offer, the higher your auction prices will be.
