Cabbage Patch Kids: A Cabbage Patch Kid Phenomenon For 20+ Years

The Cabbage Patch Kids, a creation of Xavier Roberts waaaaaaaaaaaaay back in 1978 were never "sold". Instead, Roberts adorable creations were 'born' at Babyland General Hospital in Cleveland, Georgia and proud parents paid an 'adoption fee'.

The Cabbage Patch Kids were one of the greatest toy phenomenons of the later 20th century. In Georgia, especially, it was a common sight to see grown women shopping and lunching with their babies in hand. At restaurants, the Kids had their own chairs and were always appropriately dressed for the weather. (We once spotted two 60ish ladies having a tug of war over a highly sought-after Kid.)

New Cabbage Patch Kids are still sold today, but it is the older ones that bring generous prices on eBay. For example, a vintage "Preemie", Imogene Kristel received an astonishing 58 bids! She sold for $172.49 and still has her pacifier and original adoption papers.

The Cabbage Patch Kids dolls have eBay sellers that make a comfortable living just from these dolls alone. They are truly an amazing toy story.
