The history of Coco Chanel: Beginnings

Coco Chanel was born Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel in Saumur, France in August 1883. She adopted the name Coco during her short café singer career. Although first better known as mistress of a rich French army officer and (later) an English industrialist, Coco Chanel used the money she got from her patrons to set up a millinery shop in 1910. Her hat designs quickly became popular among the French society.

The "Roaring Twenties”:

But that was only the beginning. In 1920s new Coco Chanel designs shattered the few hundred-years-old tradition of women’s fashion.

She introduced new trend – the “boy-look”. Soon all women from the society adopted the short haircut and simple, causal clothes created by Coco Chanel or inspired by her designs. At the same time she introduced probably the most renowned of all Chanel products – Chanel No. 5 perfumes.

WWII and after:

After the fall of France, Coco Chanel designs were no longer in the center of public interest – there were much graver things to discuss. What’s more, during the Nazi occupation of France, Coco Chanel had a short affair with one of German officers. This short episode caused her some problem after 1945 and it seemed that the popularity of her designs diminished.

1954-1971:

Nevertheless, she decided to return to the world of haute couture. Her great comeback in 1954 restored the position of Coco Chanel among the first rank fashion designers. Her designs,including famous Chanel suit easily caught the eye and were as important to the fashion of the 60s as they were in the 20s.

She worked until her death in 1971.
