Thick Mattress Pads: When Choosing A Mattress Pad Thicker Is Better

Thick mattress pads have become increasingly important in our modern culture. Desperate to get a good night's sleep, many spend as much attention on choosing a mattress pad as they do when picking out a mattress.

Here is an example of a thick mattress
pad sold on eBay: 4" thick electric heated
pad with multiple heat setting. Ahhhhhhh ...

The thicker, the better, when it comes to mattress pads. There are several reasons for having a thick mattress pad:

Reason #1. It protects the mattress. What is a mattress pad, anyway? Basically, it's a relatively simple covering whose primary purpose is to protect the mattress from wear and tear. With the cost of a good mattress today, buying a sound pad is a frugal choice. Pads somewhat prevent moisture from the human body from entering the mattress interior.

Reason 2. Comfort: it is important to our backs to have a firm support and that should come from the mattress itself. .

However, a thick pad on top will make it softer to lie on and more 'sinkable', adding considerably to our comfort

Reason #3. A mattress pad increases the life of your mattress. In fact, some mattress companies state that they won't honor their warranty unless the owner uses a pad - although how they can possibly know this is a mystery!

Mattress pads are made of various materials:

Flat Mattress Pads: are fitted with elastic and they are polyester exclusively. These are usually the cheapest kind and provide the least protection.

Quilted Mattress Pads: are made of polyester and cotton. They fit snuggly on your bed and are almost elastic in feel.

Woolen Mattress Pads: are - surprise! - made of wool. They are definitely best on fall and winter nights, but they keep moisture away from the body and can be surprisingly comfortable on hot night - IF your sheets are quite protective. With thin and flimsy sheets, a thick wool mattress pad can be quite uncomfortable when the temperature is 80 degrees.

Foam Mattress Pads: these pads distribute the weight of your body evenly, are soft because of the foam and are quite cool, making them a sound choice.

Memory Foam Mattress Pads: the claim to fame of memory foam is that it molds to your body and relieves pressure points that cause pain in the neck, legs and back. These are incredibly popular today.

A few more important points about mattress pads:

How mattress pads are held in place: the pads have either plastic or anchor bands to hold them in place so they aren't slipping and sliding all over your mattress.

Care of your thick mattress pad: cotton and polyester mattress pads are washable, although we recommend using the 'fluff' cycle on your dryer. The care label will tell you how to clean your pad and it's best to do so several times each year.

Size: the pads are manufactured in the standard twin, double/standard, queen, king and California king sizes. There are companies who will make custom-sized mattress pads, but these are considerably more expensive. Remember: the thicker your pad, the larger the sheet you will need to cover it.

There are also special mattress pads that are anti-bacterial and safer for folks with allergies. Generally these are made of all natural materials and no chemicals. They cost more but are worth it, in our view.

It is clear that a thick mattress pad is a financial investment, as well as a wise choice for comfort and sounder sleep. Isn't it nice when what's sensible matches with what we want? Thick mattress pads are a sound investment!
